What is IAA-USA?

The International Association of Art (IAA) has been affiliated to UNESCO as a non-governmental organization (NGO) since 1954 and is recognized as the only international professional association in the field of visual arts. . Miró, Calder, Delaunay, Braque and more, were all members. The objectives of IAA are to stimulate international cooperation among artists of all countries, nations and peoples, and to improve the economic and social position of artists at the national and international levels as well as to defend their material and moral rights.

The IAA-USA is the newest Regional Chapter of AIAP-IAA representing professional artists who reside in the United States. Each qualifying member is issued a Global Professional Artist Identification Card. The IAA card is recognized and accepted by museums and art institutions around the world and is an important tool for the artists in their professional artistic research. These institutions recognize the benefit they gain from enabling the artists (in the same way as art critics and art journalists) to visit exhibitions, art events and collections of art, to carry on research and to gain inspiration.

All members are eligible to participate in World Art Day exhibitions as well as apply to the international and intercontinental exchange/residency programs.

World Art Day

An International Celebration of Art Created by The International Association of Art and UNESCO

April 15 is World Art Day.  It is a world-wide celebration of art created by the International Association of Art (IAA) to promote awareness of the work of artists and to recognize the profound importance of art to inspire and enrich our lives.  The arts help us perceive the world in novel ways, enlarging our understanding of what it means to be human.  Engagement in the arts helps us feel more connected to others and to the communities we live in.  At its core, the IAA is all about the spirit of creativity, freedom of expression, artists’ rights and the role of artists in society.

The first World Art Day was observed in 2012. April 15 was chosen because it is the birthdate of Leonardo da Vinci, recognized as a champion of freedom of expression, tolerance and brotherhood. Leonardo is also celebrated for works that elegantly illustrate the influence of art on a wide range of human endeavors.

The International Association of Art was born in Beirut in 1948 at the Third General Conference of UNESCO.   The IAA became an independent organization in 1954 and declared a UNESCO partner. Its membership is spread over five continents.  Artists such as Miró, Braque, Delaunay, Moore, Calder, among many others, are the IAA’s founding fathers.

The day has been made official in Los Angeles by a proclamation of the LA City Council.  It is also marked on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) calendar.
